Those communities are Baking Great Bread at Home, Crust & Crumb Academy, and From Oven to Market.
What started with sharing recipes and answering questions has grown into a worldwide community of home bakers who learn together, share their successes, work through their failures, and celebrate every loaf along the way.
But teaching bread is only part of what I do.
More Than Recipes. An Entire Baking Ecosystem.
I'm the creator and curator of Recipe Pantry, a growing collection of more than 200 recipes that have been baked, tested, and enjoyed by thousands of bakers in our communities.
From your first sandwich loaf to naturally leavened sourdough, ancient grains, holiday breads, and enriched doughs, the Pantry exists to make good recipes accessible and reliable.
I also develop digital tools that solve real problems home bakers face.
Those include:
- Crust & Crumb Interactive Baking Glossary: More than 237 terms and techniques explained in language home bakers can understand.
- Starter & Levain Studio: A practical tool for managing sourdough starters, planning feedings, building levains, and understanding fermentation.
- Sourdough Yeast Converter: Helping bakers convert recipes between commercial yeast and sourdough without getting lost in the math.
- Fermentation Compass: Helping bakers better understand the relationship between temperature, time, and fermentation.
- The Mill: A companion for bakers exploring freshly milled flour, whole grains, and the differences between modern and ancient wheat.
- Holiday Shoppers Guide: Carefully selected baking equipment, tools, and gifts, including special discounts I've personally negotiated with manufacturers and suppliers for our communities.
These aren't tools developed in isolation. They come from real conversations with real bakers, often because somebody asked a question or ran into a problem that deserved a better solution.
Seven Books. One Teaching Philosophy.
I'm the author of seven books, including Sourdough for the Rest of Us, From Oven to Market, and Bread: A Journey Through History, Science, Art and Community.
My books, classes, videos, and recipes reflect the same philosophy:
Perfection is not required. Progress is.
Before building these communities, I spent 26 years working in television advertising and marketing with CBS and Fox. I'm also a United States Army veteran and a former farmers market bread vendor.
I've stood behind a market table selling bread. I've experienced the frustrations of failed dough. I've learned from mistakes, and I've experienced the satisfaction of pulling a beautiful loaf from the oven.
Those experiences influence how I teach today.
Building Communities, Not Just Audiences
Baking Great Bread at Home brings together more than 50,000 bread enthusiasts.
Crust & Crumb Academy takes that relationship further through structured education, live Saturday bake-alongs, practical demonstrations, and a community where bakers help one another improve.
From Oven to Market helps those who dream of selling their bread understand the business side of baking, from pricing and production to finding customers and building something sustainable.
I also produce educational videos, baking tutorials, newsletters, and articles covering everything from sourdough fundamentals to freshly milled ancient grains.
And there's always something new on the drawing board.
Why I Do This
Somewhere, somebody is standing in their kitchen looking at a bowl of dough, wondering whether they've done something wrong.
I want that baker to have somewhere to turn.
Not for judgment. Not for a lecture about everything they should've done differently.
For an answer they can understand, guidance they can trust, and a community that wants them to succeed.
That's why I write the books, develop the tools, build the communities, and keep showing up.
Great bread shouldn't be reserved for professionals. It belongs in every kitchen.
And if I can help you bake a better loaf tomorrow than you baked yesterday, we're doing something right.
Come bake with us.
